On This Day...1989 - It was 25 years ago this week that one of the largest Fire/EMS/Police mutual aid emergency incidents in the history of the region unfolded at the PA State Correctional Institute at Camp Hill, located along Lisburn Rd. in Lower Allen Township. This dangerous and destructive event lasted 3 days and included over 200 injuries, the taking of 17 hostages and the complete destruction of nearly half of the prison’s buildings. Dozens of emergency service units from the 6 counties surrounding the prison were activated to work at the scene or transfer to cover the communities in close. Harrisburg Bureau of Fire units Squad 8 and Tower 3 and the members of A and C Platoons spent over 21 continuous hours at the scene extinguishing numerous large fires and using their full selection of forcible entry tools and lighting. The Pennsylvania State Police declared the incident under control at 0938 hrs on Friday, October 27th, 1989. An award winning 10 minute documentary video of the incident can be seen at the link below. https://youtube/watch?v=JYdM9Sopj8s
