On This Day: African American Life in Detroit in 1966: An eclectic rock band from Toronto named the The Mynah Birds record two singles for Motown Records. Vocals for the tracks It’s My Time and Go On And Cry are supervised by Smokey Robinson and laid down by group members Ricky Matthews (known later as R&B funkster Rick James); Neil Young (folk rock icon of Buffalo Springfield as well as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young fame); John Taylor; Bruce Palmer (Buffalo Springfield co-founder); and Rickman Mason. The recordings, however, won’t hit record stores anytime soon. It is reported that Motown executives are concerned about Matthew’s AWOL status from the U.S. Navy and his prior arrest record. The tracks are pulled from a distribution schedule and won’t be released until 2006.
