On This Day: African American Life in Detroit in 1972: Bobo Brazil crushes Pampero Firpo The Wild Bull of the Pampas to win the National Wrestling Alliance United States Heavyweight title (for the fifth time) at Cobo Arena. Born Houston Harris, Brazil had become the first African-American to win the coveted title in 1962. Known as the “Jackie Robinson of Pro Wrestling,” the 6-foot, 6-inch, 270-lbs. Arkansas native has defeated a who’s who of contemporaries, including the Sheik, Dick the Bruiser and Gorilla Monsoon.
