On This Day In Herstory. On December 22, 1942, Judy takes time from her next picture in preproduction, Girl Crazy, to record the number she will be singing as herself in the all-star musical, Thousands Cheer, The Joint Is Really Jumpin Down At Carnegie Hall. Written by Roger Edens who also credits Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane, this catchy tune with a boogie woogie beat will later be noted as one of the first songs to use the term rock with music; as Judy will sing, ...cause anything can happen when they start to rock. Accompanying Judy on the piano is the classical pianist, harpsichordist, and conductor of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Jose Iturbi, in his first of several movie appearances for MGM. Thousands Cheer, a romantic comedy starring Gene Kelly and Kathryn Grayson, to premiere in NYC in September 1943, will feature many Hollywood stars playing themselves in a show organized to entertain the troops. Like many pictures of the day, it will serve as a vehicle to boost the morale of Americans at home and abroad during WWII. - Chris Stevens
