On This Day In Herstory. On January 2, 1954, Judy films what will be the final scene in A Star Is Born when, as Miss Vicki Lester, she appears on the same stage of her opening scene at the Shrine Auditorium and speaks the emotionally potential classic line, Hello, everybody. This is Mrs. Norman Maine. Taken straight from the original 1937 film, the original dialogue of the final scene was reportedly written by two gentleman, Budd Schulberg and Ring Lardner, Jr.; tapped by producer David O Selznick to come up with a satisfactory ending. Schulberg and Lardner (uncredited in the movie) may have been inspired by an actual event when they came up with the line, Hello, everybody. This is Mrs. Norman Maine. In January 1923, famous silent film actress, Dorothy Davenport, had just left the side of her equally famous actor-husband, Wallace Reid (who had died in a sanitarium after battling drug addiction) when she appeared before reporters, and over the airwaves declared, This is Mrs. Wallace Reid.
