On This Day The Battle of Arnemuiden the first navel battle of the 100 years war took place. It was also the worlds first navel engagement using artillery as the English ship Christofer was armed with three cannons. Despite this the English ships were vastly outnumbered by the French and lost the battle having sustained losses of over a 1,000 men and all 5 ships were captured. 1861 Robert Bosch German inventor was born (He is most famous for the invention of the spark plug. Car makers had long struggled to find a reliable system to ignite the fuel and air mixture in their engines. He also invented several other electrical and mechanical devises for cars. He was the founder of the Bosch GmbH company) 1866 John Ainsworth Horrocks English explorer died. (He was exploring Southern Australia loooking for good agricultural land. Before he got there he died, so he is more famous for the manner of his death than anything else. Whilst on a hunting party to get food for the expedition he was shot by his own gun when the camel he was riding lurched suddenly. He received a very substantial wound and died a month later from gangrene. After his death the camel which had always been a troublesome creature was shot and killed on the orders of Horrocks)
