On This Day in 1892: “A-6573 James Stewart convicted of robbery and sentenced to 4 years & 11 months on the 7th of this month,” writes Warden Michael Cassidy, “when being taken to court this a.m. by the warden and overseer Wilkins...when getting off the street car at Broad and Filbert Street the prisoner broke away and could run faster than the warden...he got out of sight before he was apprehended.” The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that the prisoner was not handcuffed, and that other street car riders “could not tell from outward appearances which was convict and which was keeper.”
