On This Day in Seneca County History – March 17th, 1947 – Tiffin’s newest grocery store, Kroger, opened on the corner of Madison and Monroe Street. There were actually several smaller Kroger Stores scattered around Tiffin, but this larger store took the place of those stores. And it wasn’t called a “supermarket” back in 1947, but instead it was called a “food department store”. The new Kroger Store was at this location until 1960, when it moved to Westgate. A new store called “Cook’s Downtown” moved into this location in 1961 but changed their name to “Cooks Food Center”. Then in 1964, the name changed to “Food Giant” before closing its doors around 1966. The building remained vacant from 1966 until 1970 and was demolished to become the existing parking lot. Today’s photo is a little blurry, but it shows the Cooks Food Center on the corner of S. Monroe and Madison Streets, with the old Hubach brewery/dairy sitting behind the store along the river.
