To reach the group stages, Spurs faced Young Boys of Switzerland in a play-off round. The first leg was in the famous Wankdorf stadium in Bern. The players did not get to grips with the artificial playing surface well, and within 28 minutes found themselves 3-0 down. Bassong managed to pull one back before half-time. With a Harry talking to at the break, Spurs came out with a better gameplan in the second half. A late Pavlyuchenko gem in the 83rd minute secured two valuable away goals. Despite the loss, Tottenham easily brushed aside the Swiss outfit, 4-0 in the return leg at The Lane eight days later to go through to the group stages 6-3 on aggregate.
