On Thursday, April 10, 2014 at 6 P.M., the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts (One Museum Drive, Montgomery) is opening its doors to the public to celebrate the special exhibitions on view at MMFA this Spring. In honor of the new shows, the Museum will host a free reception with many of the artist featured in the museum galleries, followed by a lecture on prominent themes of Southern nineteenth-century art by historian Martha R. Severens. During the reception, Museum guests will meet featured Alabama photographer Jerry Siegel and many of the regional artists he photographed and who appear in Creator/Created: Jerry Siegel Portraits and Artists from the MMFA Permanent Collection. In addition to Mr. Siegel, other artists expected to be in attendance are, Gary Chapman, Dale Kennington, Janice Kluge, Dale Lewis, Charlie Lucas, Clifton Pearson, Melissa B. Tubbs, Jake Wagnon, Clark Walker, and Yvonne Wells. For the past sixteen years, Siegel has turned his camera on a remarkable group of artists, from the little-known self-taughts to internationally recognized painters, photographers, quilters, and sculptors. Often meeting these artists in their homes or studios, Siegel provides an intimate glimpse into many of the South’s most creative forces. His new MMFA exhibition, Creator/Created, features Alabama artists along with their works in the MMFA Permanent Collection. The Creator/Created exhibition is on view until June. 1. A new show opening this Thursday is Romantic Spirits: Nineteenth-Century Paintings of the South from the Johnson Collection. This exhibition features 35 paintings created between 1810 and 1896 that exemplify various facets of the Romantic style relative to popular cultural icons of the Old South. Including portraits, still-lifes, genres, and landscapes, the works in the exhibition demonstrate both the sophistication of the artists who lived and worked in the South, as well as their desire to reflect the values and more of their patrons. The Romantic Spirits exhibition is on view until July 6. “We are so pleased to present exhibitions focusing on the rich heritage of the South,” said Mark M. Johnson, the director of the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts. “One historical and one contemporary, truly reflecting the depth and breadth of Southern themes and media.” Also on Thursday, the Museum will recognize students featured in the new ARTWORKS exhibition, A Romantic View of the South. Students from nine Montgomery-area schools contributed to this exhibition; each creating paintings and photographs of the Southern region. Spring Exhibition Calendar: Ke Francis: A Selection of Large Scale Works, Creator/Created, and Romantic Spirits are on view at MMFA until early June. Portraits of Paul R. Jones is on view until April 13 and Our Town closes May 11. A full description for each show can be found at mmfa.org/art/exhibitions/ Where: Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts Wynton M.
