On Thursday, January 30, 2014, the LHS Vision program hosted a Skilled Trade Career Expo. Sixty plus students had the opportunity to learn more about careers in Skilled Trades. Representatives from the Boilermakers Local #455, Millwright Local #1192, IBEW Electrical Workers Local #558, a TVA Mechanical Engineer, and Carpentry and Machine Shop Instructors from NWSCC met with students in the library from 11:45 until 1:30. The representatives provided students with helpful tips of what they can do now to better prepare themselves to be successful in their postsecondary plans. Encouragement to keep attendance up, show good work ethic, and be responsible for one’s own actions were common trends seen throughout all trades represented. This program is funded through the Tn-ACHE SEED grant that was awarded to LHS for the 2014 Spring Semester. The primary goal of the TnACHE grant is to reach all high school students in economically distressed regions and assist them in providing greater opportunities for postsecondary advancement. TnACHE grants increase high school graduation rates, postsecondary rates, and establish infrastructures of community-wide support providing all students with information about and access to postsecondary education.
