On Thursday, July 24, 2014, members of the Oromocto RCMP and RCMP Capital Region Traffic Unit performed a joint traffic enforcement operation focusing on the Move Over Law. Officers stopped vehicles on the Trans-Canada Highway in Oromocto, and issued 11 tickets in relation to this law. The law came into effect in January 2013 and we still see a high number of people not obeying the law, says Cst. Derek Black of the Oromocto RCMP. The law is aimed at everyones safety to ensure motorists wont collide with an emergency vehicle, or endanger anyone near an emergency vehicle. Under the law, motorists are required to follow these directions; When an emergency vehicle is stopped on the highway, and has its flashing lights engaged: . Slow down and proceed with caution . Make sure it is safe to proceed, then move over to the left, away from the vehicle . If there are two or more lanes of traffic, the driver must move into another lane, if it can be done safely The penalties for failing to obey the Move Over Law, is a fine of $292.50, and a loss of three demerit points.
