On Thursday, October 9, 2014, Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury was elected the President of the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA). In doing so, she has become the first Bangladeshi to be elected as president of an international organization. Before voting began, Dr Shirin addressed the 321 members from 175 parliaments of 53 Commonwealth nations who were present at the 60th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon. In her speech, she said that parliaments around the globe need to address the issues of poverty eradication, ensuring food self sufficiency, reducing maternal and infant mortality, promoting gender equality, preventing of violence against women, disaster risk reduction and management, and climate change adaptation through innovative responses. She pledged to work together with CPA member parliaments to bring about convergence of diverse perspectives, which she believes is the beauty and strength of CPA.
