On Thursday, September 11, Word Thursdays at Bright Hill Literary Center will celebrate and launch the co-winner of BHPs Poetry Chapbook Competition Claudia M. Stanek, East Rochester; and Toronto, CA poet Lolette Kuby. They will read from and sign copies of their books after the open mic, during which all those present are invited to read from their own poetry or fiction or that of others for up to five minutes, and after the intermission, when refreshments are served. The readings will take place in the Word & Image Gallery at Bright Hill, 94 Church Street,Treadwell, NY, now hosting Barbara Ardan Paintings. There is an admissions fee of $3 (18 and under, free). Claudia M. Stanek grew up on the border of Polish-Catholic steel town Depew and German-Lutheran rural Lancaster in Western New York state. She received her MFA from Bennington College (2007). She is a founding member of non-profit Just Poets in Rochester, NY. Her work has appeared in Conte Online, Redactions: Poetry, Poetics & Prose, Euphony, Fourth River, and Roanoke Review, among others, as well as the anthologies Cinquainicity, Community Voices, Knocking on the Silence: A Finger Lakes Anthology Le Mot Juste, and Common Intuitions. Her poem Housewife was selected by composer Judith Lang Zaimont as the inspiration for a commissioned libretto for the 2009 Eastman School of Musics Women in Music Festival. Claudia received an SO Stipend from the Arts & Cultural Council of Greater Rochester as well as a writers residency in Bialystok, Poland. Her work has been translated into as well as published in Polish. She lives in East Rochester. Martin Mitchell selected her ms. as co-winner of BHPs Poetry Chapbook Competition. Lolette Kuby moved from Cleveland to Toronto in 1999. She earned her doctorate from Case Western Reserve University and taught in the English Department of the Cleveland State University. In Toronto she taught briefly in Toronto at Humber College and now devotes full time to her own writing. Numerous literary journals have published her short stories, articles, and poems, and she has authored several books: An Uncommon Poet for the Common Man: A Study of Philip Larkins Poetry (literary criticism); In Enormous Water (poetry); Faith and the Placebo Effect: An Argument for Self Healing (non-fiction); Set Down Here (poetry); Inwit (poetry), Out of Cleveland, (Short fiction); Writing Personals (novel). Presently under consideration are a book of poetry, Day, and a second book on self-healing, Health and the Art of Changing Your Mind. Bright Hills 2014, 22nd-year programs are made possible by grants from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature; Otis A. Thomson; A. Lindsay and Olive B. OConnor; A. C. Molinari; Dewar, and Tianaderrah Foundations; Stewarts Shops; the Abraham Kellogg Fund, Delaware County Office of Economic Development, Delaware Youth Bureau, through the auspices of the New York State Office of Children and Family Services; Abraham Kellogg Education Fund; Delaware National Bank of Delhi, and with the support of Bright Hills members and friends. Bright Hills facilities include the Bright Hill Community Library, home to more than 12,000 books and literary books and literary and art periodicals that may be borrowed by local residents; the complete catalog is online at bhc.scoolaid.net/bin/hom.
