On Thursday, September 18, 2014, the Monroe County Prosecutor’s Office formally authorized the criminal charge of “False Report of a Felony” against Hayley Turner, age 18, of Bedford Township, Michigan. This charge is a felony offense punishable by up to 4 years in prison and a fine of up to $2,000.00. If convicted, the court may also order the defendant to reimburse the local unit of government for expenses incurred in the emergency response, police investigation and prosecution of the defendant. The incident occurred just after 10:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 7, 2014, when while reportedly driving in the area of Crabb Road and Dean Road in Bedford Township she was talking to a friend on her cell phone and indicated she saw a man laying in the ditch. Ms. Turner almost immediately advised her friend that the man had a gun and the phone call then disconnected. Ms Turner’s unoccupied vehicle was located a short time later at the scene. A number of law enforcement agencies, led by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, conducted an intensive search for Ms. Turner based on the initial report of the incident. A day later, a witness located Ms. Turner in Ecorse, Michigan standing on a street corner, partially clothed, and holding a puppy. After interviewing numerous witnesses, searching various cellular phone records and computer records and interviewing Ms. Turner it was determined that no abduction had occurred. Ms. Turner is expected to be arraigned today on the felony charge in the 1st District Court in Monroe County, Michigan. Senior Trial Attorney Michael Roehrig has been assigned to handle the prosecution in this case.
