On Thursday a committee appointed by our county Superintendent of Schools meets to discuss a “Request for Review of Media and Instructional Materials” initiated by a local group of parents and other concerned citizens including me. We are alarmed and dismayed at the inaccurate and inappropriate portrayal of Islam in our public school textbooks as they relate to the teaching of world history. The textbooks examined by our members demonstrated numerous patterns of omissions, errors and bias toward Islam and against Christianity. Additionally, the quantity and specificity of the information presented varied widely between the religions, with the religion of Islam being presented in a much more voluminous and deliberate manner. We are confident that if the members of this Challenge Committee examine our concerns in an open and unbiased manner, they will conclude that the information presented in these textbooks fails to portray Islam in a fair and accurate manner and robs our children of the truth needed to properly comprehend and respect the world’s diverse societies.
