On Thursday morning, Group 5 started their day bright and early (3.00 am!) to travel to Massada for sunrise. Once at the top, they saw the beautiful sunrise and davened shacharit on top of Massada, before hearing all about the history of the zealots who were on Massada when the Romans laid siege to it. They then walked down the ‘Snake Path’ to breakfast which awaited them at the base of Massada. They then went to the Dead Sea, where they had the opportunity for separate ‘swimming’ (floating!). After lunch, they went to Ein Gedi, where they did a hike through Nachal David, where King David is said to have hid in Tanach, and refreshed themselves in the natural springs there. They then drove to Kibbutz Galon, where they had dinner and family visiting time. On Friday, they went to Adulam, where they had an ecological workshop, before visiting the ‘sound and light show’ in Kfar Etzion, an interactive video-based museum about the thirty-five soldiers who fell in battle whilst protecting Kfar Etzion in the 1948 War of Independence. They then went to the Bi’ar tunnels near Efrat, where they walked through the underground water tunnels in the dark! They then went to the Sataf springs near Jerusalem for a short hike, before returning to their hostel to prepare for Shabbat.
