On Tuesday, Brigantine voted to ditch a once popular public safety director position for 3 chiefs. Overtime payouts, an arbiters ruling & contract negotiations are still a problem though. City employee costs account for 2/3 of Brigantine’s budget. According to Wallace McKelvey & Press of Atlantic City: Last year, the fire chiefs position was offered to someone in house, but it was turned it down. The Fire Department ( still in negotiations ) still has not responded to the citys proposal. The process has been so difficult, Blumenthal said, because the contracts and their associated costs are a legacy of prior administrations. But their burden will be passed on indefinitely until the contracts can be amended. The use of past practices as a rationale for keeping costly contract provisions may hurt the city, she said.
