On Tuesday, December 23, 2014 Director Tom Hackney addressed the media in reference to an aggravated assault with a firearm on a Jacksonville Sheriffs Officer. Investigation revealed an officer with the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office responded to the 5900 block of Scott Street in reference to a citizens call about a suspicious vehicle. When the officer arrived, he noticed two vehicles stuck in a muddy vacant lot. A check revealed at least one of the vehicles had been previously reported stolen. During the investigation, a vehicle pulled up to the area and three black males approached the vehicles. When the officer was spotted by the suspects, one of them pulled out a firearm and shot at the officer, fortunately missing him. The suspects got back into their vehicle and fled in a high rate of speed, subsequently crashing a short time later where the suspects fled on foot. As Director Hackney points out, This highlights the dangers the men and woman face daily at the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office.
