On Tuesday I spent several hours in La Puya, Guatemala, with residents who have opposed the installation of a giant gold mine in the mountains that are their home. I was moved by the commitment of these very poor people who are literally willing to die to defend their homes and the environment, especially the women who have led the movement and kept it amazingly nonviolent. So far they have successfully blocked the attempts to move giant mining equipment into their community. Yet before dawn today the riot police arrived and the U.S. company is again attempting to move the equipment in. The church bells have been ringing in a nearby village, calling the people to resist. My heart is heavy, remembering the valiant women who spent a couple of hours with me, sharing their stories as we sat in the shade near the entrance to the proposed mine. Today they are likely to be beaten and arrested. Strength, sisters.
