On Tuesday July 9, 2013, my younger daughter Karen became a United States citizen at a naturalization ceremony in Oakland, California. In fact, on the Vigeant side, she is a fifth-generation American, although only my late father was actually born in the United States. (My own U.S. citizenship is based not on residency in the U.S.A. but on rather short-term wartime service (Vietnam Era) in the U.S. Army). For Karen, dual Canadian/American citizenship could open some interesting employment opportunities although she is presently quite happy with her job as a research microbiologist in San Francisco.
