On Tuesday we had to say goodbye to our dear old girl Amaya. She was 11 years old and was with us for nearly as long as we have been together. A few months back she ruptured her cruciate ligament in her left knee and she struggled to heal from it while supporting her weight on a severely arthritic right hip. Several days ago she re-injured her knee and her already arthritic hip was just not strong enough to support her Lab frame. She became depressed, painful and unable to live a proper life. The only thing left we could do for her was to make sure she felt no more pain. Amaya was a dog built for adventure from the time she was a puppy. She traveled to Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Idaho, Wyoming and Montana. She lived in California, Oregon and Washington. She felt small but curious among the Redwoods of California, loved the Oregon Dunes, saw aliens in Roswell, ran across the White Sands of New Mexico and gambled in Las Vegas. She found ghosts at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado and heard the echo of her bark at Bryce Canyon in Utah. She watched Rick lose his wallet to the under side of the driver’s seat in Wyoming before lightening and thunder pushed us on to Montana. She saw deer on the side of the freeway on the way to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. She swam in the Pacific Ocean as well as countless rivers and creeks. She visited British Columbia and Alberta, snifffing Banff, Jasper and Lake Louise. Most impressively, she climbed to the top of a glacier in British Columbia! Amaya loved the outdoors, and it was fitting that she took one last ride in the car through forested roads before she said goodnight for the last time. She was our beloved fur baby, loyal friend and travel companion; our “mangey mutt” for many years and we will miss her.
