On Veterans Day: To my youngest son, my baby, thank you for all - TopicsExpress

On Veterans Day: To my youngest son, my baby, thank you for all you did and do for your loved ones, for you country, for the downtrodden. While I was fearful and cowardly, and skeptical of the cause, you enlisted in the Army in 2003, trained and worked tirelessly, and when worked to the bone, you and your unit were sent to Germany and then Iraq. You served in the 1st Infantry Division and was discharged honorably, earning a Valorous Unit Medal with your unit and the Army Commendation Medal. When you came home, you enrolled in school, putting your GI Bill to good use. After 7 years of grueling study, you earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Utah last June, all the while still wearing your combat boots because they were the most comfortable shoes you ever had. Sometimes you even slept with your combat boots on! I am eternally thankful that you returned safe and whole, and at times when your door is open and you are sleeping, I peek in to see that you are there and I thank your Protector that you are safe and sound. You used to say When we went to war in Iraq, America went to the mall. I was proud that you followed your commitments, and that you understand and understood that, while I supported you completely, I also went to the anti-war rallies and spoke out against the Iraq War - and you supported me in that. You were with me in spirit! Yet you still did your job while in the Army. The world is not black and white but many shades in between. In your pursuit of a job now (over 100 applications in the past 2 months), I support you and respect you in this new venture. I am very proud of you.
