On Voter ID Laws: My mother lived in the same town for 50 years, - TopicsExpress

On Voter ID Laws: My mother lived in the same town for 50 years, served on the City Council, and voted every year. But when she stopped driving, she let her license lapse. At 80, she moved in with us, in a new town. It took three trips to the BMV, multiple calls to the hospital where she was born, and several weeks time to finally get her an ID. Without my help it never would have happened. Likewise, there are many poor people who do NOT have bank accounts, cars, college degrees, airplane tickets, new homes, smart phones, or any of the other things that might otherwise require an ID. Many, have lived in the same place and are known by the people who need to know them, but have no ID. Others have moved many times, and lived in the cash economy, and may not even know what hospital they were born in. Im all for requiring an ID, but only after a three-to-five-year national campaign to assist everyone to acquire one, coordinated by the Social Security Administration in combination with the Census Bureau. It will cost millions, but it will make sure that every single citizen can be properly identified AND be allowed to vote. BTW: to get my mothers ID, we needed a copy of her birth certificate. We got one by calling the hospital and giving her name and birth date. They had no way of knowing if she really was who she said she was, but for a fee they were happy to send her a copy. When we went back to the BMV for the third time, birth certificate in hand, they didnt even ask for it. In other words, lots of hoops, but they were all a farce.
