On Wedding Wednesday (I know) today we have Andy Harris telling us why the right DJ can make or break your party. "Why book a DJ ? It depends on a lot of factors, and of course who you ask. Ask a venue manager and he may well give you the option of their in-built speakers, ask a bride or groom who have just got married and they will probably tell you a different story. Some people think a DJ is seen as a commodity and not a service provider, they think of the 1970’s style Peter Kay character who turns up with some flashing light boxes 30 minutes before the start of the evening wearing jeans and T shirt and playing either Adagoo or dance music all night. True there are some of these ‘DJ’s’ around, and they will be lower in price than a professional DJ who has state of the art equipment, and more importantly experience. This is where the commodity vs service comes in. Every bride will travel looking for the perfect venue, they may look at dozens before deciding on ‘The One’, they would met the wedding co-ordinator, they would have asked questions about the venue, looked at the bedroom and tasted the food before making that decision. The venue they chose was chosen because it was right for the couple. It may have been a few hundred pounds more expensive but it is your wedding, Right ? Every bride will try on a few dresses before deciding on the one, It may have been a few hundred pounds more expensive but it is your wedding, Right ? Every bride will hand pick the flowers, detailing each colour, It may have been a few hundred pounds more expensive but it is your wedding, Right ? Are you getting the idea ? So why book a DJ because he is £20 cheaper than another ? Or he’s a friend of a friend, or does a pub gig on a Friday night ? Part of the problem is back to image again, however a professional DJ can MAKE a party happen whereas a poor DJ will BREAK a party, don’t forget the evening reception is the longest part of your day, and the one with more of your friends. A professional DJ will have the equipment, and the back up but this is only a fraction of what is required, sure you need equipment, but you also need the knowledge and experience to know what to play, when to play it, and how to play it, along with what to say, when to say it, and when to be quiet. So how do you find a great DJ ? This is easy, you HAVE to meet your DJ and ask questions, they should also ask you questions about your ideas and plans, after all it is YOUR wedding. Make sure they have the legal requirements, Public liability insurance (PLI) and that their equipment has passed the yearly safety check (PAT), your venue should ask for this and if the DJ has not got it they will be refused entrance to plug their equipment into the hotel power supply. Ask about music, what they normally play, although experienced DJ’s obviously read the dance floor and can adapt accordingly. They will source your music for you, some of the lower end DJ’s have been known to ask for your iPod ! Ask about lighting, experienced DJ’s can adapt lighting to suit the venue, put in mood lighting to enhance your venue, or features within your room(s), they direct lighting onto the dance floor so as not to blind your guests, they may have special lighting that can project your initial onto the dance floor. They may even supply dance floors, star cloths, large plasma screens so your photographer can project the days images for your evening guests to see and other small things to put the finishing touches to your celebrations. Ask to see pictures of some of the set up, if they starting talking technical to you then stop and look elsewhere, another DJ mind be impressed that they have a DMX512 6 channel light but as long as it does what you want, and you can see that in the photographs, then that’s all that matters. Professional DJ’s will not promote their services at your wedding, if they have a banner with their name or telephone number on it they are not for you. Remember it’s quality and not quantity that matters here. In years to come you do not want to remember your wedding evening as a bit of a disappointment by booking the right DJ you will remember it for all the right reasons. The laughter and fun everybody had, the lighting and the music, the perfect end to your perfect day" Thanks Andy, Pop over and give him a "like" :) https://facebook/yourbigeventltd
