On Wednesday 4/2, we are hosting: Do Muslim Women Need Saving? We expect a stimulating discussion. Few topics generate as much controversy in the West as the treatment of women in the Muslim world. Since 9/11, Americans have been inundated with a steady stream of images and news reports detailing violence against Muslim women, portraying them as victims of Islam and patriarchy. The practice of veiling has attracted condemnation in Western circles as an inherently misogynistic social convention that runs counter to universal principles of equality. Some questions include: Do Muslim women need to be saved or do we in the West have a Savior Complex? How do Muslim women themselves view their role in society, and how much of what we see in the Muslim world can be attributed to Islam?
