On Wednesday I experienced racism and hidden racism at Jasons deli on Apalachee Parkway. I was enjoying my Chicken Caesar salad when an elderly Caucasian lady and her friend sat next to us. I watched as the friendly Black elder gentleman attendant brought their food, made their drinks, and brought one of the ladies a piece of strawberry shortcake. I thought to myself, Hes very kind. I asked him about water, and he pointed me to where the glasses and water could be found. That raised a slight flag for me. But I let it pass. At the end of the meal, we asked for carry out boxes and he loudly says to my friend, What do you need a box for? Havent you eaten enough food? She was deeply offended and asked him to still bring her a salad box. He went away and returned with a soup container. She proceeded to ask the Hispanic male attendant for a box, which he brought with no questions asked. While packing the ladies next to us decided to leave the black male attendant some money which I thought was for a tip but as it turns out, the lady wanted to pay for the cake he had brought her. At this point her companion whispers (from two feet away), Dont leave it on the table, put it in his hand. She then proceeds to tilt her head towards us. She tells her this a few more times with gestures. Then she tells the attendant that she told her friend not to leave the money on the table because of us, and this fool laughs like he understands. What really gets me about the entire thing was that the attendant tells her the $5 cake was his treat to her, puts the money in his pocket, and stepped and fetched for their entire meal, but treated us like we didnt just pay $26 for lunch. Can we treat all customers the same at Jasons Deli? #lasttimeeatingthere Chuck Hobbs Lee McKnight # beheardorbemuted
