On Wednesday, I went on sort of a shopping spree. I was really only looking for an appropriate pot to replant some cacti (and I failed on that count). However, stopping into a consignment shop, I found this interesting wooden carving. The carver started with a flat piece of wood, and then carved into it to create the free-standing forms. A pull-tab from a can has been nailed on the back to facilitate hanging. When I saw it, I immediately thought, Australian, even though 1) it doesnt look like any aboriginal iconography Ive ever seen, and 2) its on wood rather than bark. What do my fave Australians, Rodney Hatch and Marilyn Chilese Hatch think? The more I contemplate this piece, the more Im leaning toward some sort of domestic outsider art.
