On Wednesday, a bench led by Chief Justice of India H L Dattu expressed its unhappiness at government appealing against the order of the Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT), which had modestly increased disability pensions of ex-servicemen. The Govt. had appealed against the order citing the reason that the benefit to the soldiers would burden the exchequer with an additional Rs. 1500 crore. The SC sternly observed: “So what? The government can have at least this much of budget for its soldiers who are dying for the people of this country every day. What is the point of having these memorials and placards saluting our defence personnel if you litigate against the disabled soldiers? You should pay them.” The SC rightly nailed the Government’s misplaced priority!
