On World Habitat Day, earlier this week, we organized a small gathering at Vellupillai-Watte in Rajagiriya to educate the people who will at some point be evicted from their homes of 20-40 years; that is, as soon as UDA finds a willing investor for the property already advertised on their website. That was to educate them on rights under the law and also under the National Involuntary Resettlement Plan or NIRP. None of them are against development, but obviously they dont want to be thrown out on the road. If you remember the people from Mews Street whos homes were back hoed in 2010 are still living in small temporary shelters, not resettled even after four years. Its really a heartrending situation. This is the other side of beautification of our city. They too are citizens of this country and many have title to their land; only they are poor and powerless. Should we not consider development with equity?
