On a day when Im having a pity party, I think of my young, shining, single mama student, Jean Jean Shakti Bowen, who was kicked of her home in high school by her drug-addicted and mentally-ill parents, got herself to college on her own, and is a super Gender Studies major!! Jean ran out of scholarship money and federal support in her last semester, yet shes still moving along! Shes written to her governor, to local officials, has asked for private meetings with university officials. Shes courageous, tenacious and never gives up. Somehow, shes headed for graduation and then graduate school in social work--all the while raising a child with severe asthma on her own. Gofundme seems to be working (she still needs more) and the school is (at last) trying to help. If she lived in Denmark, there would be no question shed be getting aid. I wonder about this country, how hard shes had to fight simply to raise a child and go to school. And yet, shes doing it!
