On a grainy surveillance video, a woman talking on a cellphone comes into view as she walks along the sidewalk. When she reaches a crosswalk, it’s clear that she doesn’t press the walk signal, doesn’t look both ways and, in fact, doesn’t stop at all before stepping out into the road. While crossing four lanes of traffic, the woman is nearly hit once by a driver who slammed on his brakes just in time. She still doesn’t stop or look either direction. Then, in an instant, she’s struck by a car and thrown into the air. Her body flips, a shoe goes flying off screen, and she lands on the pavement.
