On a late July afternoon in 1995, I met with several friends at the Eidman farm for an impromptu S.O.C. rehearsal for our upcoming Kokomos show. At the farm there was this tall, pale, shy brunette in a sleeveless white blouse, black jean shorts, and hair in a ponytail. She was cute, but I really wasnt focusing on such things. Within the next day or two, she and her friend Heather had tracked me down at Verlans house. The brunette, Jennifer, had fallen head-over-heels madly in love with me from our brief meeting at the farm. I cant blame her. I mean youve seen me, right ladies? So Jennifer wants to go out on a date with me. I met her a few nights later, July 29, at the 4-H diner at the LyCo Fair. Heather, Jennifer, Ryan and I all hung out for the evening just chillin. I dont know that Jennifer and I really even spoke to one another. Two weeks and several more relatively conversation-free dates later, we decided to date each other exclusively on August 12 - which is a sentimental date already: my Overstreet Grandparents wedding anniversary. So here we are after 19 years together. A few stupid teenage break-ups; one time of me moving out after we had lived together after high school and I was being a dumb, scared little boy; three jobs; two or three college/tech school programs and clinicals; about a dozen bands; three (shitty) sets of renters; three children (she wanted FOUR); six animals down to two; and zero (ZERO!) screaming, yelling, knock-down, drag-out, fights to the death. A few days here and there of not speaking, but I cant remember the last time that happened. You can bet your ass she does, though. Today, as she is sitting in Burlington waiting to play doctor, and I am sitting at the kitchen table on my laptop with three children in bed after they made me endure Frozen AGAIN, and about to go check the clothes in the dryer, we celebrate 14 years of pretty damn good marriage. For not speaking much at all -IF at all - on our first several dates, we sure figured out that we were supposed to be together. I cant explain how much she means to me. I cant explain how grateful I am for her support of me and my deadbeat musician lifestyle. For the children she has given me. They help me be a better person every day. She is tough as nails, sharp as a tack, and pretty as a picture. She is my world. Happy Annversary, Jenny! And it wouldnt be complete without a song - (and some sarcasm): youtube/watch?v=nH4QliI_y_A
