On a particularly somber day spent walking the streets of Barcelona a few months ago, I found myself perched high atop the lookout point of Gaudis, Park Guell. It is an incredible vista, yet I felt inexplicably alone in that moment. No more than ten minutes later I wandered into a courtyard that housed basketball courts, and at the edge of it, under a canopy of trees, was half circle of benches, surrounding a man, playing Spanish guitar. All of the trepidation I had previously been feeling evaporated almost instantly at the sound of each soulful note that he seemed to coax from the instrument with incredible grace and feeling. I sat on one of the benches and listened to him play for over an hour. His name Is Mariano Olivera, and I cannot suitably express how peaceful and full of life his music is.
