On a personal note: I had a homeless friend who lost her job in 2008 because of the recession and never was able to find work. She and her children were getting $526 per week in SNAP (food stamps) and $506 per month in TANF (what most of you think of as welfare) for a whopping total of $1,032 per month. My friend had her kids taken from her, when she couldn’t live in her trailer on an abandoned lot. Without her kids, she only received $200 in monthly SNAP, while the foster parents keeping her children received over $640 per child, or a total of $1,280 per month. My friend received a total of $832 per month when she had both children. Not that I’m advocating for the state welfare system, but if youre going to have one, isn’t it better to keep kids with parents and give the entire $1,480 to my friend and her children? Instead we pay foster parents more to take care of them. The largest homeless population in the U.S. isnt the men we see on the street, its the children we put in foster care. All of this is paid for with your time, your labor, your body, and without your consent. Thanks for reading and please share! - Bodhi
