On a snowy Detroit day 28 years ago, we awoke to the news that Ronald Reagan had ordered a strike on Libya in retaliation for the Berlin discotheque bombing. This was a week before Geraldo Rivera opened Al Capones vault to find a 50 year old empty moonshine bottle and 11 days before we found out about a little test-gone-wrong in a place called Chernobyl. That day, in spite of the chaos and craziness of the time, a young man was born and changed my life forever. I held him in my arms and wondered how the hell I was ever going to do him justice. Little more than a boy myself (3 years younger than he is now), I knew that I must provide and nurture him, teach him how to be a man, teach him how to be a good person. I was, to say the least, a little scared. The years that followed were anything but what we planned. Moves to Dallas, Oklahoma, California, and back to Oklahoma followed. Schools changed, friendships grew and faded and were replaced and grew and faded again. A set of new, blended families emerged and required the delicate balance of diplomacy and time sharing. Beloved family members passed, and new beloved family members born I guess I must have done ok, though. Today, hes an intelligent, caring, compassionate man with a mildly quirky sense of humor. Hes successful, in a loving relationship with a wonderful woman, and Im very optimistic about his future. Happy birthday Clayton! I cant begin to tell you how proud I am to be your father.
