On a tour of Deutschheim State Historic Site, you will see a piece of newspaper history – a Washington hand iron press like the one used for the publication of the German language newspaper, Hermanner Wochenblatt, beginning in 1843. Editor Eduard Muehl began the serial publication of Uncle Tom’s Cabin in German on the front page of the paper in March of 1853. Each week, the paper printed another episode until the book was complete some six months later. German immigrants to Missouri were intensely pro-Union and anti-slavery. The Anzeiger des Westens in St. Louis was the first German language newspaper to speak out against slavery. But Eduard Muehl’s weekly, the Hermanner Wochenblatt, became the most passionate advocate for freedom with readers throughout the state and beyond becoming familiar with his views. Make sure a stop by Deutschheim State Historic Site is part of your summer plans. For more information on the site, visit mostateparks/park/deutschheim-state-historic-site.
