On another business trip, at the end of a long day and needing a break and some non formal socializing, I ventured into the restaurant of my hotel to have a drink at the bar and to chat with some other weary business travellers. Knowing that social conversation was the objective, I had put my cell, on which I had already spent too much time away. After sitting for 5 minutes I couldnt help but laugh as the other 6 patrons who were at the bar were too engrossed in their own phones to realize what was happening around them. A moment later a gentleman walked into the bar, took up the seat next to me and started a conversation that ultimately covered a range of topics from business, to sports, to marketing, to oil and gas. I was able to learn through the conversation that this individual was an entrepreneur, ran an internationally successful consulting company in the oil and gas industry, was of great means but understood the importance of having balance and family and frankly, was the type of person that many in that bar would like to meet. I thought it tremendously ironic that the most successful person by far in the room was the one who wasnt busy with social media, but rather, was busy just being social!
