On arriving near the old garrison, I saw that the Indians had formed a line to the left of the road, leaving a perpendicular bank to the right of which the road passed. I perceived that the prisoners were running what is termed the gauntlet and that the Indians were shooting and tomahawking the men as they passed the line, to gratify their vengeance. On reaching the starting place I put off as fast as I could and ran near the muzzles of their guns. In this way I passed on without injury except two strokes over the shoulders with whipping sticks. Just as I entered the ditch around the old garrison, the man before me was shot. As he fell, I fell over him and for a little while the passage was blocked by those who stumbled over the dead man and myself. - Lt. Joseph Rogers Underwood, Kentucky Militia
