On behalf of the Board of Directors and members of the AACCNJ, we are proud to announce that John E. Harmon Sr., president and CEO of the African American Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey, will be the keynote speaker at the 44th commencement for Burlington County College on Saturday, May 17, 2014. The graduation will be held at 10 a.m. under a tent on the main campus off Pemberton-Browns Mills Road. “I am looking forward to conveying a message of hope, triumph and perspective with the intent of unleashing the potential of these future leaders”, said Harmon. As noted in its mission statement, the chamber aims to economically empower and sustain African-American communities and businesses with direct outreach programs and in that way improve entrepreneurship and free-enterprise activity. Harmon, 53, of Trenton, has also been named chairman of the board of the National Black Chamber of Commerce. He was installed at a March 7 luncheon in Washington. Harmon has been a strong advocate of BCCs First Book program, which was launched last year and went into practical effect this spring. The chamber was one of the sponsors. Nearly 40,000 free books were given to Burlington County children under a partnership that state officials hope to see expanded to the rest of New Jersey. The First Book Initiative began as a partnership between Burlington County College and several local and national groups. The books, worth $400,000, were delivered by truck to the colleges Mount Laurel campus earlier this year and distributed to a variety of schools and agencies. BCCs commencement is held at the end of the spring semester. Any student who has applied for graduation through his or her Web adviser, and has met or is in the process of completing his or her declared degree requirements during the spring or summer terms, is eligible to participate in the ceremony. Between 1,100 and 1,200 students are expected to take part in the graduation, college spokesman Greg Volpe said. For more information, contact Volpe at 609-894-9311, ext. 1610, or [email protected].
