On behalf of the Navajo Nation, ahehee Navajo Nation Gaming Enterprise for supporting this years 68th Navajo Nation Fair! For Immediate Release August 19, 2014 Navajo President Ben Shelly Lauds Navajo Gaming Enterprise Fair Sponsorship WINDOW ROCK, Ariz.—On August 18, Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly commended the Navajo Nation Gaming Enterprise for their substantial contribution of over $160,000 that will go toward the 68th Navajo Nation Fair. The NNGE presented the checks at the Navajo Nation Museum. President Shelly thanked the NNGE for their continued support in giving back to the Navajo people. “This contribution represents coming together and supporting one another. Let’s make this year’s fair enjoyable for the hundreds of thousands of people who will descend upon our Nation’s capital in the coming weeks. We thank the Navajo Nation Gaming Enterprise for making this generous contribution and for supporting the many events that will take place throughout the fair,” President Shelly said. NNGE chief executive officer Derrick Watchman said, “We at Navajo gaming want to be supportive of the Navajo Nation Fair. We want to see this continue. We’re giving back to a very important event.” The president also emphasized that it was the Navajo people who voted to approve gaming on the Navajo Nation through referendum, which has resulted in 1,400 jobs with benefits at the four Navajo Nation gaming facilities including Fire Rock, Flowing Water, Northern Edge in N.M., and Twin Arrows near Flagstaff, Ariz. In addition to the jobs provided at the gaming facilities, the president also stressed the importance of small businesses like Navajo ranchers and livestock owners who supply mutton and beef to the Navajo Gaming Enterprise for its restaurants. “This is exactly what we want, to make our Navajo entrepreneurs grow and to support each other. I would like to see more Navajos get involved, just like our ranchers did and provide supplies to our enterprises like Navajo Gaming,” said the president. Watchman called upon NNGE vendors who stepped up with $59,100 that will go toward the 15 different events, including the Ashkii Happy Kids Day, Ender Fest, Frybread Contest, Baby Contest, Open Indian Rodeo, Wild Horse Race, Social Song and Dance, Night Performance, Contest Pow Wow, Junior Livestock, Horticulture, Senior Livestock, Barbeque, Fine Arts and Craft, and the Miss Navajo Pageant. When addressing this year’s fair theme, “Promoting Family Values Through Culture and Tradition,” the president underscored the importance of coming together as family and sees this year’s fair as a way to reestablish relations of k’e. The president also thanked tribal employees for, “making things happen and for keeping the Nation going. I appreciate every year what you do. The Navajo Nation Fair is one of the biggest things that we look forward to each year.” Nation fair manager Genevieve Tsouhlarakis said, “Today is a special day.” Tsouhlarkis thanked the NNGE for helping the Navajo Nation to celebrate Navajo pride and joy, “which is the Navajo Nation Fair.” The bottom line she said is, “see you at the fair!” -30-
