On changing aesthetics: a few days ago I was browsing the photography section of one of my favorite used bookstores and came upon a guide to taking outdoor portraits from 1946. The book was interesting as an artifact and filled with still-relevant information, except on the subject of background selection. The section proceeded to list six or seven absolute donts, and among this mostly valid advice the book warned against making the background behind the subject violently out of focus, or what we would now call bokeh! Of course, theres a time an a place for bokeh with there being plenty of technically inappropriate instances for usage, but with our fetish for fast glass hardly anyone these days would call it an absolute dont, especially for portraits. Idve bought the book were it not slightly out of my price range as it was a fascinating little find.
