On day 4 of our trip, 6/12/2013, we left Heimaey, far left of the map, and went to the Hotel Laki in Kirkjubadjarklaustur, middle right. On day 5, 6/13/2013, we drove on to Skaftafel at the far right. Much of this portion of the trip was over lava and sand desert, called sandur. A sandur is a broad, sandy outwash plain, a wasteland really because frequent glacial floods, and the lack of nutrients, effectively prevent any plants from taking hold.
