On fantasy armors, compiled from comments of fa/tg/uys & ca/tg/irls: ___ 1. However, there is two things worth to notice about leather armour; 1) Tanned leather is rigid and barely flexible. Even a normal leather clothes are barely flexible. Thus a portray of leather armour as something that doesnt hinter your movement is a huge misconception. Even a chainmail, which is fitted mostly by gravity, isnt as constricting as tanned leather. Trousers made of this make jumping and fast running impossible, because your legs will barely flex, ending with sort of RoboCop (the original) movement 2) Leather armour in many games covers things that barely can be treated as armour: jackets, regular throusers, different suspensors (like cowboy throusers), stuff like that. They provide little protection, but are lightweight, flexible and unconstricting. Sort of the thing the concept of leather armour was aiming for, while not being an armour at all. Its just an additional protection, mostly against bruises and scratches. 2. Yes you can. Thats the point - roleplaying games have inversion of reality. Plate armour is the least constricting and most lightweight. Chainmail is goddamn heavy for its size, not to mention being fitted by gravity (so its hanging on you with considerable amount of loose fit), and tanned leather will KILL your movement and any flexibility. Just think about it - in full plate armour a knight or just anyone else was barely hittable and it took a lot of effort to bring him down, while he only suffered from overheating. 3. Plate armour IS light. How much do you think a 2-4 mm of iron or steel can weigh? Full plate armour, without helmet (thats the heavy part, at least 3 kilos) wont exceed 5 kilograms. For comparison, full chainmail is AT LEAST 10 kilograms 4. It is a common misconception that the plate armour of European soldiers adversely affected mobility in a significant manner; in fact, plate armour was lighter and featured more even weight distribution than a full complement of a modern firefighters gear.
