On many Christmases, beginning in 1974, I transmitted an updated version of Henry Wadsworth Longfellows Christmas Bells to all Strategic Air Command Automated Command and Control System (SACCS) equipped SAC unit command posts and missile wing alternate and squadron command posts via the SACCS/465-L. On several Christmases, I sent the same from the Looking Glass to the HQ SAC Command Center and Numbered Air Force, unit, and missile alternate and squadron command posts. The 1956 version, revised by Johnny Marks, is called “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day”. I hope you enjoy it and I hope all of you have a very Merry Christmas. I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day As adapted by Johnny Marks, 1956, from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s Christmas Bells, December 25th, 1864 I heard the bells on Christmas day Their old familiar carols play, And wild and sweet The words repeat Of peace on earth, good will to men! And thought how, as the day had come The belfries of all Christendom Had rolled along The unbroken song Of peace on earth, good will to men! Till ringing, singing on its way The world revolved from night to day, A voice, a chime A chant sublime Of peace on earth, good will to men! And in despair I bowed my head “There is no peace on earth,” I said, “For hate is strong And mocks the song Of peace on earth, good will to men.” Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: “God is not dead, nor doth He sleep! The wrong shall fail The right prevail With peace on earth, good will to men!” Dan-O December 24, 2014
