On my first trip to Alaska in the early 90s I drove a new Class A - TopicsExpress

On my first trip to Alaska in the early 90s I drove a new Class A motorhome for delivery to a dealership. After arrival I promptly rented a car and called back home telling everyone Id be late getting back. I had a backpack, tent, sleeping bag and cooking gear, everything I needed for a great vacation. From Anchorage, where I started, I headed north to Denali National Park. It was late in the day and Id covered a good five hundred hard miles earlier to make it to the dealership before closing. Needless to say, by the time Id gone only a few miles out of Anchorage I was tired, tuckered, beat. I found a dirt side road and pulled off to look for a place to nap. Within less than a minute I was sound asleep, even though in the small (cheap) rental car I had no room to stretch out and get comfortable. But tired as I was it wasnt a problem, in no time I was out like a light. Sometime later I felt a rocking motion, then more bouncing, I opened my eyes, half asleep still to see a black bear bouncing on the hood of the car. As slowly as I could I reached into the back seat and grabbed my camera. Unfortunately it still had a 300mm telephoto lens on it... I knew I had to change the lens to get the shot I wanted, but was afraid moving to get into the camera bag would surely spook him and so I took the only shot I could. Without the explanation you probably wouldnt be able to recognize the image, but now that Ive explained the situation, perhaps youll see what I did that day. I got one shot off and he was off... Off like a shot, running like Id yelled boo. Wish Id had another lens on and gotten a better photo, but still love this because of the memory.
