On my knees with tears streaming down my face as I concluded my Good Friday Sermon on the Excruciating Sacrifice of Christ Jesus (His Triumphal Entry, Last Supper, Prayer at Gethsemane, Trials, Flogging, Crucifixion, Death, Burial, Resurrection), it hit me how empty and shallow some of the preaching has become in some pulpits. Motivational speeches will not transform. Talks on leadership will not produce the radical conversion needed in our world. Christ-less, cross-less, blood-less preaching is power-less preaching. We must preach Christ! (David Arnett). I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead (Philippians 3:10-11, NIV).
