On my last day in Argentina, this man formally called for the investigation of the President, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, for attempted cover-up in a case that involves the death of 85 people. He was scheduled to give evidence on Monday. I cant possibly stretch how bad Nismans death is. Any which way you look at it: obstruction of justice, abuse of power, political persecution... The fact that Nisman was killed is a terrible crime. A load of spit in the face of democracy, an insult to the Argentine people and a disgrace to our country and our institutions. But what is truly revolting about it, is that nothing will come of it. An official report will dismiss his death as suicide, or a freak accident. All matters of scandals surrounding Nismans personal life will be gleefully reported by the government-controlled media outlets, and those who dissent will be treated as traitors. The most obtuse among our population will indeed eat this up and believe that Nismans death, mere days before his declaraction, is in fact a coincidence. In the aftermath of my very recent trip to my beautiful Buenos Aires, with the throbbing pain of missing my family and friends still burning deep, I cannot help but think that to leave this country I love was the single smartest choice Ive ever made. Words fall short to express my indignation and my grief today.
