On my way to work today, I witnessed two small random acts of kindness. A man in a suit offered me his seat, I declined so he sat down in between two sleeping women. We were on one of those older A trains w the orange seats, you know, how theyre laid out so some of the seats are perpendicular to one another. An older woman and her daughter were talking about something, I couldnt hear bc my headphones were in, but I could tell they both were looking for something in their bags. The man in the suit reached into his pocket and extended his arm over one of the sleeping women and handed the older woman a pen. She proceeded to fill out her paperwork after thanking him multiple times. Although I couldnt hear her, I could see the gratitude shining through her sweet brown eyes. We got to the Fulton stop and the man got off, so he couldve been, you know, one of those suits. Before he stepped off though, he motioned to the women that they could keep his pen. The train went on its way, Chambers next. The two sleeping women woke up and the one on the right stepped off. The one on the left stayed awake and started playing w her phone. Canal then West 4th St, a heavier set woman stepped on. She was dressed nicely and had a big bag w tons of paper sticking out of it. She stood facing the train doors, right next to the formerly sleeping woman now on her phone. She was looking at her reflection in the door window and was adjusting herself. The formerly sleeping woman reached over the little divider between them towards the nicely dressed woman and pointed out that her bra and breasts were slightly exposed between the buttons of her blouse. She had pretty large breasts so I think this was an ongoing wardrobe malfunction for her. She thanked the formerly sleeping woman and started to fix her malfunction. Her blazer wouldnt button over her breasts and she seemed a little stressed out about all this. The formerly sleeping woman though, was reaching in her bag in search of something. She found it. She pulled out a safety pin and handed it to the nicely dressed woman. They both laughed and the problem was solved. Were at Penn Station now and its my turn to step off the kindness train. I cant help but think: my train ride is only fifteen minutes long. I witnessed two effortless acts of kindness amongst strangers. This place can be so cold sometimes, and you can just feel so alone out here, but not this morning. So from a statistics standpoint, think about all the 15 minute commutes in all of NYC this morning, how many potential acts of kindness were committed? Okay, now noon commutes. Then afternoon commutes. Alright, now all over the US. Now all over the world. The potential for acts of kindness is exponential. So despite all the really (really really) bad breaking news stories filling our social media feeds right now, there are still people who choose to be good to one another. Thanks for reminding me. I hope you all have a really good weekend! One love!!!
