On one end you have the older generations of our parents and grandparents who spearheaded many civil rights issues and movements. They lived through Jim crow , civil rights, etc. Some passed on this passion to their offspring, while others have totally dropped the ball. What was the deciding factor between those who taught the next generation vs those who have seem to throw in the towel, fire burned out? This has been on my mind since I entered college at 18 years old. There are so few left with that passion compared to those who seem passive and defeated. Im sure fear plays a part. But can any of the older generation explain this where it makes sense, and how to rejuvenate them??? Without their wisdom of experience how do they ever expect the next generation to pick up the torch? Nothing worse than seeing an elder come across as passive, defeated, scared, apologetic, conforming to the established unjust system. Im proud to say there are still some great mentors who can show the way. Get X, and Gen Y (Why) LOL, will respond with respect and attention when real Veterans of this movement step up and remain committed through thick and thin. Respect goes out to one of my mentors: Ka Ka Bruce Barnes. He taught me how to just roll up your sleeves and do the work that needs done. Be the example. Its not about awards, props, or recognition, its about the work. Be content with knowing you are hands on with whatever causes you feel are relevant.
